"BITS, Pilani Distinguished Alumnus" 2011 Awards

BITSAA International congratulates proud alumni Mr. Baba Kalyani, Mr. Prithviraj Chavan, Prof. Dorairajan Balasubramanian, and Prof. Goverdhan Mehta as the inaugural winners of the "BITS, Pilani Distinguished Alumnus Award."

The awards are in recognition of the recipients’ outstanding professional contributions. The awardees are noted for their (a) dissemination or creation of knowledge, (b) enrichment of people’s lives, (c) distribution or creation of wealth, or (d) promotion or establishment of high ethical standards in private or public life, as well as upon their integrity and stature, thereby making their alma mater proud.

Baba Kalyani (’66, Mechanical)

Mr Kalyani ('66, Mechanical) is the Chairman, Kalyani Group and CMD, Bharath Forge, the world's second largest forgings manufacturer. Ranked by Forbes as one of the 50 richest Indians as well as 500 richest people all over the world, he was awarded "CEO of the Year" by Business Standard in 2004 and "Entrepreneur of the Year" by Ernst & Young the following year.
Mr. Prithviraj Chavan (’63, Mechanical)

Mr Chavan ('63, Mechanical) is the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a former Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office administering various ministries. He is a technocrat who worked in the fields of aircraft instrumentation and designing of audio recorders for anti-submarine warfare in the US before returning to India and becoming an entrepreneur in 1974.
Prof Dorairajan Balasubramanian ('55, Chemistry)

Prof Balasubramanian('55 Chemistry) is the Director of LV Prasad Eye Hospital and a former director of CCMB, Hyderbad. He has taught in a number of universities around the world and has been honored with a "Padmashri” by the government of India in 2002, among numerous other awards.
Prof Goverdhan Mehta (Chemistry)

Prof Mehta (Chemistry) is a National Research Professor in Hyderabad and Former Director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has made notable contributions in chemical sciences and specializes in the area of organic chemistry. He is a recipient of the Humboldt Research Prize of Germany, the first Indian to receive the honor.

Conratulating the winners, Dr SP Kothari, Chairman Emeritus of BITSAA International, said, "Baba Kalyani, Prithviraj Chavan, Dorairajan Balasubramanian and Goverdhan Mehta are quintessential role models to every student and alumnus of BITS! They represent the best that an educational institution can produce and they make us all proud."

The selection panel for the awardees included Mr. K.V. Kamath, Chairman, ICICI bank, Prof. Ashok Misra, Chairman (India) of Intellectual Ventures and Former Director, IIT Bombay, Mr. Kris Ramachandran, Advisor (Higher Ed.) to Mr. K.M. Birla and Former Vice Chairman and MD, Phillips Electronics, India, Prof. K.E. Raman Director BITS Pilani, Goa Campus and Director–in-Charge, Alumni Affairs, Prof. Bijendra Nath Jain, Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani. The awards will be presented during the Convocation 2011 at Pilani, on August 28, 2011. Chief Guest Dr. Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, will present the awards.
